Solsperse 11200 – Lubrizol
Solvent-based alkyd coatings continue to be widely used because of the significant advantages they offer:
- Excellent substrate wetting, resulting in higher gloss.
- During air drying, alkyd resins crosslink through oxidation, forming very high molecular weight networks that further improve chemical and corrosion resistance.
- High hydrophobicity, providing excellent water and moisture resistance.
- Improved adhesion.
But how can solvent-based coatings be formulated when low VOC content is essential?
One option is to formulate with a high solids content, reducing the amount of resin and solvent required. However, these formulations often have longer drying times and lower chemical and corrosion resistance.
So, how can these properties be better balanced?
Using a dispersant specifically designed for high-solids formulations can make a significant difference. Even better results can be achieved when the carrier solvent has been highly refined and hydrogen-treated to convert aromatic compounds into cycloparaffins, resulting in very low aromatic content and low odour (Shellsol™ D40), helping to reduce VOC levels.
Solsperse™ 11200 has been specifically developed for this purpose. It contains 50% active polymer in Shellsol™ D40, reduces system viscosity to facilitate high-solids formulations, and also offers the following benefits:
