Corrosion of metal surfaces can be a major sustainability issue, as it shortens product life cycles and wastes the energy and resources used to manufacture metal structures. It also has a direct economic impact.
Corrosion is a chemical or electrochemical process between a metal and its surrounding environment that leads to the deterioration of the metal surface.
HOW CAN A COATING PREVENT CORROSION?
The applied coating acts as a barrier between the anode and the cathode, or between the metal and the surrounding electrolyte, preventing the metal’s chemical structure from interacting with environmental compounds such as water and oxygen that cause corrosion.
An ideal coating system should be impermeable to water and oxygen and prevent ion transport through the coating film.
WHY USE A DISPERSANT?
To ensure that the pigment remains properly stabilised within the system. Optimising the dispersant results in a uniform, defect-free dry film in which the pigment has the appropriate particle size and does not agglomerate.
A coating with well-dispersed pigment is essential for providing effective corrosion protection.
